I try to avoid over sharing in witcher topics because I can see how others liked it but since you asked: By about ten hours in, the challenge had totally disappeared and the next 120 hours were me just trying to rush through combat hoping the skill curve would reappear. I think overall my biggest issue with it is that it's a snooze. For the most part I never used oils, rarely touched potions except for healing kinds and just spammed an upgraded Queen the whole game. It's not that it's complex or deep, the problem is that it's bloated. I think the people saying the combat is complex are missing the correct line of thinking. You can basically breeze through the game using the sidestep and fast-heavy attack combos.Ģ) Building off the above point, there's almost a complete lack of need for any of the oils, potions, runes or non-sword skills in the game (at least on the difficulty I played, Blood and Broken Bones).

Once you learn the controls and basic timing, the game is a breeze. I had two problem with TW3's combat:ġ) Extremely low skill ceiling to basic combat. The Souls complaints are complete nonsense, and a terrible way to discuss game design. And it never ever meaningfully evolves over the course of the game. They threw in all the elements that a Witcher is "supposed" to have, but it doesn't congeal into any kind of fun combat fantasy. It just has no design identity or direction. Without mods to add more skill slots the system feels incredibly unrewarding). Why are there 2 different dodge moves? Why is the skill tree completely awful and filled out well before you're done leveling (somewhat fixed in the DLC, but not really. It has all these various systems that tie into the combat in some way but it doesn't feel cohesive at all, like using bombs is clunky as fuck.

There's a lack of good feedback (weak sound design for combat adds to this). Effective strategies are deathly boring (casting signs over and over). It wants to be some middle ground between the fluidity of Batman's group combat and Souls-like animation priority, and the end result is a muddy mess that falls square in the middle. They designed around cool animations instead of what feels good and responsive.
